Visitor tip

Cultural notes

As a shrine dedicated to Inari Okami, Tondō Shrine is particularly revered for its association with the silk industry. According to legend, Inari Okami was said to have offered his support to the development of sericulture (silkworm cultivation) in Japan. The shrine's grounds feature numerous vermilion torii gates and shrines dedicated to the deity, symbolizing the connection between the shrine and the silk production.

Historical note

The shrine was established during the Heian period (794-1185 CE), making it one of the oldest shrines in Shiga Prefecture.
