Dayaji Shrine, located in Fukui Prefecture, is one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines and a popular pilgrimage site. Dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu, the shrine is famous for its unique architectural style, known as 'hoko-style,' which features stone lanterns placed along the main path leading to the main hall. The shrine is also renowned for its beautiful cherry blossom trees and its connection to the legendary warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune.

Visitor tip

Dayaji Shrine is associated with the mythology of Amaterasu and her role as the sun goddess. The shrine is also said to have been visited by Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who was said to have sought the god's protection before his battle against the Taira clan.
