Located in the mountains of Fukui Prefecture, White Mountain Shrine is dedicated to Mount Komanose and is believed to be one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan. The shrine is famous for its stunning natural surroundings, serene gardens, and traditional Japanese architecture.

Cultural notes

The shrine is closely associated with the mythological figure of Hachiman, the god of war and patron deity of warriors. White Mountain Shrine is also famous for its sacred 'yama-michi' trail that winds through the surrounding mountains, believed to be a path taken by Mount Komanose's spirit.

Historical note

The shrine was established during the Heian period (794-1185 CE) as a temple dedicated to the god of Mount Komanose, but it later became a Shinto shrine.
