Cultural notes
The shrine is closely associated with the mythological figure of Hachiman, the god of war and patron deity of warriors. White Mountain Shrine is also famous for its sacred 'yama-michi' trail that winds through the surrounding mountains, believed to be a path taken by Mount Komanose's spirit.

The shrine was established during the Heian period (794-1185 CE) as a temple dedicated to the god of Mount Komanose, but it later became a Shinto shrine.
