Fukui

The Eight-Faced God Shrine, located in Fukui Prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of fortune and prosperity, Fujin. The shrine's architecture is typical of the Sengoku period style, with wooden buildings and tiled roofs. The complex includes a grand hall and several smaller shrines, each enshrined with different kami. Visitors can experience the tranquil atmosphere of the shrine, surrounded by beautiful gardens and tranquil ponds.

Visitor tip

For a unique experience, visit the shrine's main hall during the annual Hachimatsu festival in late November, when devotees light paper lanterns on eight pillars representing the god's eight faces.

Cultural notes

The shrine is known for its association with the legend of Kintoki, a famous monk who visited the shrine and possessed incredible strength. Visitors can also experience the traditional Japanese tea ceremony held at the shrine's teahouse during certain festivals.

Historical note

The shrine was built during the Muromachi era (1336-1573), and its current structure dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868).
