Located in the heart of Echigo Takamatsu, white mountain shrine, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of agriculture and fertility, Ryūjin, as well as the god of the mountain, Yatagarasu. The shrine is situated at an altitude of 1,142 meters and is one of Japan's highest shrines. It is known for its unique architectural style, which combines traditional Shinto elements with influences from Buddhist and Chinese cultures.

Cultural notes
Yatagarasu, a mythical bird with three legs, is said to be enshrined at this shrine. The shrine's architecture reflects its significance as a mountaintop shrine, with many of its structures built to mimic the shape of mountains and waterfalls. White Mountain Shrine is also famous for its beautiful autumn foliage.
Historical note
The shrine was built in the Edo period (1603-1868) during the reign of Tokugawa Iemitsu.
