Tokuwamatsu Shrine in Osaka, dedicated to the Shinto kami of rice and prosperity, is one of Japan's oldest shrines. Founded in 654 AD during the Asuka period, it has been an important cultural and historical landmark ever since.

Cultural notes

Tokuwamatsu Shrine is famous for its unique tradition of 'tsukimi' - a viewing ceremony of the full moon. Visitors can participate in this ancient ritual by gazing at the moon with sake and sweets, symbolizing gratitude for good harvests.

Historical note

The shrine was originally a small temple dedicated to the Buddha, but after being destroyed by fire, it was rebuilt as a Shinto shrine in 712 AD.
