The Omi Jingū Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Mie Prefecture but its ancestral home is at the present-day Shirahama City, Wakayama and more notably at Shirakawa, Shiga. The shrine honors the emperor Yōmei who received the sacred sword Kusanagi from Amaterasu. It was originally founded as a minor shrine during the Heian period, but it has since been relocated to its current location in Shiga Prefecture during the Kamakura period.

Visitor tip
To avoid long lines, visit the shrine early in the morning or later in the evening.
Cultural notes
As a sacred site for the Imperial Family, the shrine has been visited by various emperors throughout history. It is also famous for its beautiful gardens and traditional architecture.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923.
