Located in Shiga Prefecture, North Village Shrine's (北野神社) main hall is a striking example of Edo-period architecture, with its distinctive curved roof and ornate wooden decorations. As one of Japan's most famous shrines, it attracts millions of visitors each year. Built to honor the god of fertility and prosperity, Amaterasu Omikami, the shrine is also famous for being the site where Empress Jingū is said to have left a sacred sword, the 'Yata no Kagami,' in 221 BCE. Cultural notes
North Village Shrine is famous for its association with Empress Jingū and her legendary sword, Yata no Kagami. The shrine also hosts an annual Autumn Leaves Festival (Koyo Matsuri), which celebrates the changing colors of the leaves in the surrounding gardens.
