Ise Grand Shrine is the largest Shinto shrine in Japan, dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami. The current main hall dates back to 1873, but its origins date to 776 AD when the shrine was established at the foot of Mount Iwato. Originally located at the top of Mount Iwato, the shrine was rebuilt and relocated several times due to natural disasters. Today, it is still a sacred site for Japanese people, particularly those seeking purification, protection, and good fortune.

To avoid long lines, consider visiting early in the morning or late in the evening. Also, take a moment to wash your hands at the temizuya before entering the main hall.
Cultural notes
Ise is closely associated with the mythology of Amaterasu, who was said to have descended from the heavens and brought light to the world. The shrine's location on the coast also makes it a significant site for sea-faring rituals and ceremonies. During the Cherry Blossom Viewing season, visitors often perform traditional dances in honor of the goddess.
Historical note
The shrine's original location was moved from Mount Iwato to its current site in 1889.
