吉沢神社

Located in the heart of Akita City, Gyozawa Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine dedicated to the worship of the kami, Sugawara-no-Mikoto and Suguwara-no-Izumi-no-Kami. The shrine's architecture reflects traditional Japanese design with a large torii gate and a five-story pagoda. Visitors can explore the shrine grounds which include a beautiful garden and a museum showcasing local art and artifacts.

Visitor tip

Visitors should not forget to take a photo in front of the large torii gate, but be mindful of the shrine's rules and respect for tradition by removing shoes before entering the main hall.

Cultural notes

Gyozawa Shrine is closely associated with the legend of Sugawara-no-Mikoto, who was said to have been the brother of the famous Japanese poet Ariwara no Narihira. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in July called the Gyozawa Matsuri, which features traditional dances and performances.

Historical note

The shrine was founded in 1658 during the Edo period, during the rule of Tokugawa Iemasa.
