松尾神社

Located in the city of Echizen, Shiga Prefecture, Matsuo Taisha is one of Japan's most famous Shinto shrines dedicated to Emperor Ojin, a legendary emperor who ruled from 270 AD to 310 AD. The shrine's impressive main hall was rebuilt in 1638 during the Edo period, and its sacred trees are believed to be over 1,000 years old. Visitors can explore the shrine's museum, which houses an extensive collection of artifacts related to Matsuo Taisha's history.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes

Matsuo Taisha is associated with the kami (spirits) of Emperor Ojin, Matsue no Okami, and the Eight Generations' Kami, who are believed to protect travelers on the famous Nakasendo Highway. The shrine also hosts an annual Cherry Blossom Festival in April.

The original shrine at this location was established in 698 AD, during the Nara period.
