Byoryusai is a Shinto shrine located in the Sakyo-ku ward of Kyoto, dedicated to the kami Hachiman Okami. The shrine was built during the Heian period (794-1185 CE) and features a traditional Japanese architecture with a wooden torii gate and a Five-Story pagoda. Visitors can walk through the peaceful grounds and pay their respects at the main altar.

For a more authentic experience, try visiting Byoryusai during the spring cherry blossom season to witness the stunning display of sakura trees surrounding the shrine.

Cultural notes

As one of Kyoto's oldest shrines, Byoryusai is said to be dedicated to Hachiman Okami, the god of war and patron deity of the imperial family. The shrine also holds an annual Hachiman Matsuri festival in May to honor the deity.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in 1869 after its original structure was destroyed by fire during the Edo period.
