Cultural notes

The Three Island Shrine is associated with the legend of the god Amaterasu Omikami's visit to Kamakura. According to myth, Amaterasu's son, Ninten, was turned into a frog and later transformed back into the god's grandson, Susanoo-no-Mikoto, who is also enshrined at Three Island Shrine.

Historical note

The shrine was built in 1861 during the Meiji period as a result of its elevation from a Buddhist temple by the imperial family.
