大川八幡神社

Cultural notes

Hachiman Okami is often depicted as a god with two heads, one facing each side. According to Shinto mythology, he was sent by Amaterasu to help the Emperor from the Taira clan defeat their rivals. The shrine also hosts an annual Hachiman Festival (Hachiman Matsuri) in May, which features traditional dances and performances.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in 1598 CE after being destroyed by a fire during the Toyotomi Hideyoshi's conquest of Osaka.
