This Shinto shrine in Osaka is dedicated to the deity Susanoo no Mikoto, known as the god of storms and rain. The name 'Shinobazu' roughly translates to 'a place where there is no disease', which may refer to its connection with water or purification. As one of the oldest shrines in Japan, Shinobazu Oji is believed to have been founded during the Heian period (794-1185 CE).

Visitor tip

To make a wish at this shrine, throw a coin into the water and then tie it around the handle of your shoes, so that when you visit again, your wish is still tied to the shrine.
