薬師神社

Miyagi

Located in the city of Sendai, Japan's second-largest city, Katsuragishinsha Shrine is dedicated to the Shinto god of medicine, healing, and pharmacist, Takamimusubi, but is also known as 薬師神社 (Katsuragi-shinsha) or simply 薬師神 (Katsuragi-shin). The shrine is famous for its unique architectural style, which reflects the region's historical influence by the ancient Buddhist temple Kannon-ji. With a history dating back to 711 AD, it is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan and a significant cultural landmark in Miyagi Prefecture.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes

This shrine is particularly notable for its connections to Shinto medicine. According to legend, a famous Shinto priest from the area was said to have healed the emperor by using a miraculous elixir made from medicinal herbs obtained from the shrine's grounds. To this day, visitors can see the remains of an ancient healing spring and herbal garden.

Historical note

The shrine was originally dedicated to Takamimusubi during the Nara period (710-794 AD) but later came under the influence of Buddhism.
