Kumano-san Jinja, also known as Kumano Shrine in English, is a Shinto shrine located in the Kumano region of Wakayama Prefecture, but it appears to be linked with Hieizan in Shiga. Founded in 757 AD, during the Nara period, this ancient shrine is dedicated to the deity Kumano no Okami, also known as Kumano Sanzan kami. The shrine complex spans over 4,300 acres and features several shrines and temples, including the Hiei Shrine and the Kumano Hongu Taisha. Visitors can explore the various temples and shrines, participate in traditional festivals such as the Kumano Matsuri, and hike through the surrounding forests and mountains.
