Cultural notes
As a shrine dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu, Enmei-ju is closely tied to the mythology of the Imperial Family and the Kami of Kyoto. The shrine also hosts an annual Spring Festival, known as Matsuri, which features traditional dances and offerings to the kami.
Historical note
The shrine was founded during the Heian period (794-1185 CE) by Fujiwara no Michinaga, a powerful nobleman who sought to establish a Shinto shrine in Kyoto to rival those of Nara.
