Located in the town of Kamakura, Chœshu's largest city, Katsuragise-ya Shrine is dedicated to the Shinto god Inari Ōkami, patron deity of rice, industry, and fertility. The shrine is famous for its beautiful autumn foliage and unique architecture, with a notable example being the ōanba tower, which houses the sacred treasures of the shrine.

Visitor tip
To fully appreciate the autumn foliage, plan your visit for late November, and consider taking a stroll along the nearby Tamagawa River.
Cultural notes
Katsuragise-ya Shrine is also famous for its association with the famous Japanese playwright and novelist Chœshu author Jun'ichirō Tanizaki, who often visited the shrine to find inspiration for his works.
Historical note
Founded in 1671 during the Edo period, the shrine was rebuilt after a fire in 1909.
