Visitor tip

Cultural notes
The shrine is associated with the mythological creature Ryūjin, who is said to reside in the depths of Mt. Ikushima. Locals also celebrate the annual Tarushima Shrine Festival (, Tarushima Jinja Matsuri) in May, which honors the mountain's patron deity.
Historical note
The shrine was originally established during the Edo period (1603-1867) as a small torii gate marking the boundary between the provinces of Shinano and Echigo.
