Hie Shrine

Hie Shrine, located in the city of Kinzan, Chiba Prefecture, is one of Japan's most famous and historic Shinto shrines. Dedicated to the god Hie, it is a major pilgrimage site during the New Year (Oshogatsu) and Cherry Blossom Viewing (Hanami) seasons. The shrine's architecture is a mix of traditional Heian and Kamakura styles, with a distinctive pagoda tower built in 1889.

Cultural notes

As one of Japan's oldest shrines, Hie Shrine is said to be the site where Emperor Jimmu, the first emperor of Japan, was born. The shrine also hosts an annual festival, the Kinzan Matsuri, which celebrates the city's founding and features traditional dances, music, and food stalls.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in 1818.
