Hachiman Shrine, located in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, is one of Japan's most famous Shinto shrines dedicated to the god of war and agriculture, Hachiman. The shrine's history dates back to the 8th century, during the Nara period. It is known for its distinctive Eight-Faced Hachiman statue, believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune.

Visitor tip

To make an offering to Hachiman, tie a red string around the railing of the shrine's entrance and pray for good luck or protection.

Cultural notes

Hachiman is often invoked by samurai warriors before battle. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in May, where visitors can participate in rituals and try traditional foods such as senbei and sake.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in 1633 by Tokugawa Iemitsu, who was a devout follower of Hachiman.
