Date Hachiman Jinja, located in Miyagi Prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of war, Hachiman. The shrine's name 'Iwadatsumi' or 'Iwata-no-kami' in Japanese originally referred to the nearby Iwada River, rather than the current deity. Hachiman's influence on the shrine may be attributed to its location near the historic Nakatsu Castle and the famous Nakatsu Hachiman Shrine in nearby Kyushu. As a result of this connection, Hachiman is revered as a protector of local samurai warriors.

Hachiman is often depicted as a stern, helmeted figure on shrine grounds. At Date Hachiman Jinja, this image is seen in an ornate wooden torii gate. Visitors may also notice the presence of ritual stones, known as 'hagure,' which are marked with the shrine's emblem.
Historical note
Founded during the Edo period (1603-1868) to honor a legendary war hero.
