Dasai Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Sanda, Hyogo Prefecture, known for its unique architectural style and historical significance. The shrine was built in 1568 during the Momoyama period, with a focus on the worship of Kunitokami no Okami, the deity believed to protect the local community from floods. The shrine's main hall features a distinctive curved roof, while the innermost sanctum contains a statue of the deity with a unique wooden construction. Visitors can enjoy traditional Japanese festivals and events throughout the year, including the Dasai Shrine Festa in April.

Visitor tip

To appreciate the shrine's unique architecture, visitors should approach from the north side of the main hall, which is designed to resemble a traditional Japanese garden.

Cultural notes

As one of the shrines associated with Kunitokami no Okami, Dasai Shrine is also connected to the mythology surrounding the god of the local region. During spring festivals, visitors can participate in a ritual called 'Okuribi' where rice and other grains are offered to the deity from the roof.
