Cultural notes
Chikubushima Shrine is associated with the mythology of Ōkuninushi, who was said to have been reborn on this island after being defeated by the sun goddess Amaterasu. The shrine also celebrates the traditional Japanese festival of autumn leaves, known as 'koyo', which takes place in November.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt in 1624 after being destroyed by a fire, and has since been restored and maintained with great care.
