Cultural notes
As a shrine dedicated to fire and volcanoes, Atago Jinja plays an important role in Sendai's annual Fire Festival (Hinamatsuri), which takes place in May. During this festival, the shrine's torii gates are adorned with colorful lanterns and decorated with offerings of sake and mochi.
