Matsushima Shrine, located in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, is one of Japan's most famous Shinto shrines. However, this is not the shrine in question, as it was built by a different family. The original shrine was founded in 1862 by a farmer named Tatsuji Nakano, who was a descendant of a noble family. He moved to Iwate Prefecture and rebuilt his family's ancestral home into a shrine, which he dedicated to his patron kami, the god of agriculture, Hachiman.
