Located in the coastal town of Ishinomaki, Dateyama Kofuku-ji is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Date no kami and is one of Japan's oldest temples. The shrine is famous for its unique style and beautiful gardens, which date back to the Muromachi period. As you approach the shrine, be sure to pay your respects at the statue of Miharu no Tsukiyomi, the god of the moon, who is believed to have created the island of Matsushima.

The Dateyama Kofuku-ji was originally built in 718 AD during the Nara period and has been rebuilt several times since then, including after a devastating earthquake in 1275.
