Look for maritime symbols and decorations that reflect the shrine's connection to sea deities and ocean protection.

文化的背景

Itsukushima shrines are traditionally associated with the protection of sailors, fishermen, and travelers crossing water. The three sister goddesses - Ichikishimahime, Tagorihime, and Takitsuhime - are considered powerful protectors of those who venture onto the seas.

歴史

Like other Itsukushima shrines throughout Japan, this shrine was likely established to honor the three goddess daughters of the sea god Watatsumi-no-kami. The Itsukushima cult spread from the original shrine in Hiroshima Bay during the Heian period, with local communities establishing branch shrines to seek protection for maritime activities and safe passage over water.
