神楽殿

Kanagawa

The god of music and dance, Amaterasu-Ōmikami is revered at the Godai Shrine in Kuroba, Kanagawa Prefecture, but a nearby shrine, 神楽殿 (Gankuten), enshrines the Shinto deity Bishamonten, known as the 'god of music' and protector of artisans. This shrine was originally built for the sake of music, dance, and theater, serving as a center for entertainment in old Edo. In 1657, it suffered a great fire but was rebuilt with an even greater emphasis on artistic expression.
