西宮神社

Nagano

Located in the heart of Nagano Prefecture, Western shrine temple is dedicated to the deity of the West wind and rain god, Hachiman Ōkami, as well as the sea god Ryūjin's earthly manifestation, the sea otter-like Shishiomaru. The shrine is famous for its beautiful gardens and traditional architecture, which have been influenced by the region's history as a major center of samurai culture.

Western temple is famous for its traditional Japanese garden design, which incorporates elements of Buddhism and Shintoism. The shrine is also closely associated with the legend of Ōtomo no Yasumichi, a 7th-century samurai who prayed at the shrine before his death in battle.

歴史

Established in 741 AD during the Nara period, Western temple has played an important role in Japanese history, particularly in the construction of the Nakasendō and Nakatōkaidō highways.
