Located in the town of Shimoishi, Gunma Prefecture, Iwagami Inari Shrine is a small but charming Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami of agriculture and fertility, Inari Okami. The shrine is famous for its beautiful autumn foliage and traditional torii gate, which appears to be 'eating' the surrounding trees. Visitors can make offerings of rice and other grains at the many grain stores along the winding path leading up to the main hall.

参拝のヒント
To avoid the crowds, visit Iwagami Inari Shrine during the autumn foliage season, but be sure to make an early morning offering before the sun rises to experience the most stunning views.
文化的背景
Inari Okami is also the patron deity of merchants and traders, which may explain the shrine's association with the famous purple sweet potatoes grown in the region. Visitors can participate in the shrine's annual autumn festival, which features traditional dances, food stalls, and offerings to Inari Okami.
歴史
The shrine was originally built in the Edo period (1603-1868) and is believed to have been a major stop on the famous Nakasendo highway.
