Ishiyama Jinja Shrine

Located in the heart of Wakkanai City, Ishiyama Jinja Shrine is one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines, with roots dating back to the 8th century. The shrine was originally dedicated to the god of the sea, Namahage, but its current enshrinement is attributed to the goddess Ishi, after whom the shrine takes its name. 文化的背景

Ishi Yamato Tamashii is the enshrined deity at Ishiyama Jinja Shrine. According to legend, Namahage was believed to have been the god's earlier patron before he was replaced by Ishi. The shrine hosts an annual festival in April, called Wakkanai Shinko Matsuri, which celebrates the arrival of spring and features traditional dances and food stalls.
