Awashima Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in the town of Oki, Shimane Prefecture. The shrine is dedicated to the god of the sea, Ryugu no Okami, and is also enshrined with the god of the island, Awashimahime, as well as other kami such as Inari and Hachiman. The shrine's architecture reflects its coastal location, with a large torii gate that appears to be floating on the water.

文化的背景

Awashimahime is said to be a kami who punishes people who pollute the ocean. The shrine holds an annual festival in August to pray for good luck and protection of the sea. During the festival, visitors can try their hand at boat racing, a traditional sport in Oki.

歴史

Awashima Shrine was originally built in 1614 by the forces of Tokugawa Ieyasu during the Sengoku period.
