Buying Cigarettes at Konbini in Japan
Convenience stores (konbini) are the easiest place for most visitors to buy cigarettes. Major chains include Lawson, FamilyMart, and 7-Eleven.
How to buy
- Go to the counter (cigarettes are not self-service).
- Ask for the brand or point at the display behind the register.
- Show ID if asked—you must be 20+.
- Pay at the counter; packs are typically ¥500–¥600.
Taspo card (usually not needed for tourists)
Japanese residents often use a Taspo age-verification card at vending machines. Tourists buying at the counter only need photo ID (passport) if the clerk requests it.
Heated tobacco
IQOS, glo, and similar refills are sold at many konbini. Devices may be in a separate display—ask staff if you do not see them.
After you buy
