Icom

Icom Inc., founded in 1954 in Osaka, pioneered accessible SDR transceivers and built some of the most beloved portable radios in amateur history. The IC-7300 redefined what a mid-price HF rig could do, and the IC-705 remains the gold standard for all-mode portable operation.

SDR Leadership

Icom’s direct-sampling SDR architecture in the IC-7300 changed the amateur market in 2016. By moving much of the signal processing to software, Icom delivered excellent dynamic range and a waterfall display at a price point previously reserved for premium rigs. The IC-7610 and IC-9700 extended that architecture to multi-band and satellite operation respectively.

Icom’s approach favors clean spectrum displays and intuitive touchscreen operation. New operators often find Icom’s menu structure more approachable than legacy button-heavy interfaces.

Portable and Field Operation

The IC-705 is arguably the most capable portable transceiver ever mass-produced for amateurs. HF, VHF, UHF, all-mode, built-in GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi — it serves SOTA activators, emergency communicators, and travelers who refuse to leave the bands behind.

D-STAR Digital

Icom created D-STAR, one of the earliest amateur digital voice protocols. D-STAR repeaters and hotspots remain active globally, and Icom radios with D-STAR capability appeal to operators who want integrated digital voice without third-party add-ons.

Who Should Choose Icom?

Icom suits operators who want modern SDR interfaces, excellent portable options, and consistent manufacturing quality. Compare brands in our definitive three-brand comparison or see best radios for beginners.
