Indra Shrine, dedicated to the Shinto god Susanoo and protector of grain, is a sacred site in Akita Prefecture. This ancient shrine was originally built by Emperor Jimmu, who established the Imperial House of Japan, in 734 CE. Over time, it has evolved to honor Susanoo's role as a kami associated with fertility, agriculture, and prosperity.

文化的背景

As a kami enshrined at Indra Shrine, Susanoo is often invoked during festivals such as the Akita Matsuri, which celebrates the province's rich agricultural heritage. The shrine also features a unique ' Susanoo no Hikeshi' stone statue, believed to be one of the oldest remaining examples of Shinto shrines in Japan.

The shrine was rebuilt in 1633 during the Edo period, after being destroyed by a fire.
