白山神社

Shiga

Located in the Japanese Alps, White Mountain Shrine is one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines, dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu and the mountain god Yari no Okami. Built in 741 AD, it was originally constructed at a site believed to be the residence of Yari no Okami. Over time, the shrine was rebuilt and relocated several times due to landslides and natural disasters. Today, visitors can still experience the serene atmosphere of this ancient shrine, surrounded by beautiful white-hued mountains.

文化的背景

As a mountain shrine dedicated to Yari no Okami, White Mountain Shrine is particularly significant during the autumnal equinox festival (Aki no Kinenbi), when devotees pray for good harvests and an abundance of natural resources. Additionally, the shrine's architecture showcases traditional Japanese design elements, such as the torii gate and wooden roof, typical of old mountain shrines.
