Dedicated to Emperor Sudō (Prince Sawara), this shrine was established to appease the vengeful spirit of the imperial prince who died in exile after being falsely accused of treason in 785 CE. The shrine serves as a place of pacification for what was considered a powerful onryō (vengeful ghost), transforming the feared spirit into a protective deity through ritual veneration. Visitors come to pray for protection from false accusations, seeking justice, and honoring those who have suffered wrongful persecution, while also paying respects to this tragic figure of early Heian court politics.
