文化的背景
Sugawara no Michizane is revered as the god of learning, literature, and academic achievement. Tenjin shrines typically feature plum trees, which were Michizane's favorite, and visitors often leave ema (wooden prayer tablets) with wishes for academic success. The deity is also associated with protection from lightning and natural disasters.
歴史
Tenjin shrines were established following the deification of Sugawara no Michizane after his death in 903 CE. Michizane was a prominent court scholar and politician during the Heian period who fell from grace due to political intrigue and died in exile. Following a series of natural disasters attributed to his vengeful spirit, he was posthumously deified and shrines were built across Japan to appease his spirit and honor his scholarly achievements.
