Hachiman Shrine, located in the city of Kesennuma, is one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines dedicated to Hachiman, the god of war and martial arts. The shrine complex dates back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE) and features a unique octagonal (hachi-mada, meaning 'eight layers') gate structure, which gives it its name, Eight-Horizon Shrine. Visitors can see the remains of the original eight-layered gate in the shrine's grounds.
