Temple of the messenger god, Takemikazuchi and the Shinto kami Ōgitsu-no-kami, who protects travelers, is located in the city of Tōkai in Ibaraki Prefecture. Visitors are advised to approach the temizuya water basin with respect, as it is used for purification before making an offering. Please do not wash your face without first washing your hands in a nearby basin.
文化的背景
Ōgitsu-no-kami is said to have been invoked by the local population to protect travelers and traders passing through the area. The shrine also celebrates the annual Ōmisoka festival, which takes place on December 31st to mark the end of the year.
歴史
The shrine was rebuilt after suffering damage during the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923.
