The Shitennō-ji branch of the Uesugi Kannon Temple's influence can be seen in the design of Uesugi Hachiman Shrine, however, the current structure is from the 1980s. The deity enshrined here is Susa no Kami (God of War) and he is also revered as a god of protection for travelers. The shrine was built to commemorate the defeat of the Taira clan at Dan-no-ura in 1181. The location of the shrine reflects its importance, being situated near the coast of Okayama Prefecture, where the legend says Susa no Kami defeated the Taira forces.
