Indra Shrine, also known as Iwate's sacred site and the oldest Shinto shrine in Iwate Prefecture, dates back to the Nara period (710-794 CE). Dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasuómichi no Kami, it was believed that the shrine was built using wooden pillars sent by the gods.
