Located in the Kibi Plain of Okayama Prefecture, the Hachimantai Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Hachiman, the god of war. The shrine complex features a unique hozu- gate and a large torii gate. According to legend, the shrine was founded during the reign of Emperor Chuo in the Nara period (710-794 CE).

Hachimantai Shrine is also famous for its beautiful cherry blossom viewing (hanami) during spring and its autumn leaves. The shrine is said to be a sacred site where Hachiman, the god of war, appears as a messenger of the emperor.

The shrine was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in 1467.
