In Shinto mythology, Akizuki no Kami is said to be a vengeful spirit born from the blood of the great general Minamoto no Yoshitsune's rival, Yoritomo. The shrine's name 'Akizuki' roughly translates to 'Eye of the Storm', symbolizing its role as a protector and guardian.
