Tottori

Ise Jingu, located in Shikoku, not Tottori, is the most famous Shinto shrine and one of the oldest. The current main hall was rebuilt after a fire in 1955. The shrine is dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu and is said to be her earthly manifestation. Ise Bay is its sacred site, considered the birthplace of the Japanese imperial family.

To experience the shrine at its most serene, visit early in the morning or late in the evening when the sun is not too high, and take your shoes off at the designated slippers.

The shrine is also famous for its rituals performed during the Akanemu Festival, which involves the recitation of historical poems and prayers.
