Located in the city of Nikkō, Eighteen Stage Shrine is a Shinto temple dedicated to the god of agriculture and fertility, Ninettsu no Okami. While its name suggests a connection to the number eighteen, there are actually only seventeen stages that pilgrims walk to reach the shrine. The shrine's significance lies in its association with the legend of Nineteen Stage Shrine, which was said to be destroyed by a group of farmers who were angry about their lands being expropriated for rice paddies. Today, Eighteen Stage Shrine is still an important pilgrimage site and hosts various festivals throughout the year, including the Nikkō Autumn Leaves Festival.
