熊野神社

Hyogo

Mount Koya's ancient forest is said to be the dwelling place of Sanzen-no-Okami, a triune deity composed of the sun goddess Amaterasu, the storm god Susanoo, and the god of rice, Kamado no Okami. The shrine at its base honors these deities as well as many others associated with the region, including Inari, Hachiman, and Kojin, or the spirits of the land.

This shrine is famous for its annual autumn leaf festival, with over 3000 trees on site displaying vibrant colors. The surrounding forest also hosts a summer festival honoring the local deity, Inari Okami.
