Located in the town of Wakkanai, on the northern island of Hokkaido, Wakkanai Hachiman Shrine is one of Japan's most northerly Shinto shrines. Unlike the original Wakkanai Hachiman Shrine destroyed by fire in 1970 and rebuilt at its current site, the Tottori shrine for the god Hachiman is dedicated to him as well. The main deity of this shrine is not known to have any special relationship with a specific location or region. However, it is said that the god was worshipped in Wakkanai since before 1868 (meiji period).
